RAPHAEL, THE HEALING ANGEL
Raphael bears the energies that awaken, regenerate and heal
According to ancient traditions, the seasons are governed by four archangels: Raffaele is entrusted with spring, Uriel (the forgotten Uriel!) presides over summer, Michael rules autumn and Gabriel winter.
The part of the year during which each of the angels exert their influence can help us to understand which forces they are characterized by. This is particularly true for Raffaele. Spring, in fact, fully reflects this angel’s temperament. As spring arrives, we can feel Raphael’s strength. In springtime, the earth’s creatures work under Raphael’s guidance to bring life into full bloom again, creating outstanding beauty. But it is not only the earth that is reborn: the archangel also speaks to the human consciousness, resurrecting and reviving it. It is no coincidence that Easter is at this time of year.
Awakening, regeneration and then healing, so-called are the energies brought by Raffaele, whose name is translated as "God's medicine" or "God heals".
The Angel of the Bethesda Pool
Raphael is usually depicted with a jar of medicine in his hands and is accompanied by a younger man. This angel is famous because of an episode in the bible: Raphael restored sight to the eyes of elderly Tobi, and then freed the girlfriend of Tobi’s son Tobia from the devil. It is said in the New Testament though that Raffaele occasionally dips into the Bethesda Pool, to stir its miraculous waters and grant health to those who will dive in it.
As always, we must go beyond superficial images to really understand his power. Again, we can use symbols and connections to help.
“Air” is the element that Raphael is associated with in arcane tradition. Air is the world of mind, thought and speech. But what does this have to do with healing?
You can make this link if you accept the human being as one in its complexity: thin but inseparable threads connect body, mind, heart, and soul. Before manifesting physically, diseases affect the psyche. Therefore, all healing must first take place inwardly before the body can heal. Otherwise, you may experience temporary relief, but malaise will arise in other ways. The causes of our ailments are not only to be traced in our physical body or in a hostile environment. If you have the courage to look deeply into yourself, you will find that they also have a psychological and spiritual foundation.
Opening up to the truth that concern us
Healing can happen when we begin to understand those fundamental things that, although concerning us, until then we didn't even know; when we start to allow healthy and effective thoughts into our minds; when we distance ourselves from mistaken impressions and decide to change bad habits. If we don’t organise our inner turmoil, diseases return to us in other ways, even after we seem to have healed.
Therefore, to truly heal means opening ourselves up to the truth that concerns us, truth we often ignore. Those who are not aware of what dwells within themselves, for better or for worse, live as though in a shell. To heal is to break free from this ‘shell’ and finally move towards a full life.
What do we really need?
Awakening the consciousness, Raphael helps restore harmony between mind, heart and soul. (Risvegliando la coscienza, Raffaele aiuta a ripristinare l’armonia tra mente, cuore e anima) .We cannot be well where there is no agreement between our internal components (Non è possibile stare bene se non c'è accordo tra le nostre componenti interiori. Young Tobia is an example of this. In the biblical tale, the angel accompanies him on a journey in search of good fortune. Tobia represents our inner child: that "young" and uncorrupted part that we usually keep relegated to one corner of the consciousness, forgetting their needs but also the help we can receive (dimenticandone le necessità ma anche l'aiuto che possiamo riceverne). It is this intrinsic part of us that can bring us back to innocence and purity of purpose. By listening to it, we are reminded of what we really need, so that we
can gradually be rid of the frills that society imposes on us and conditions us to desire. This also serves to heal us. (anche questo serve per curarci), because phony desires inevitably are transformed into burdens for our soul.
Words that heal
